All Covered Survey Reveals IT Security Risks at Small Businesses

Many Businesses Are Poorly Protected Against Common Threat

(Redwood City, CA) August 8th, 2006: All Covered—the only nationwide information technology (IT) services company focused solely on the unique needs of small businesses — today announced the results of its survey of 200 small businesses around their IT security issues.

While more than half of the respondents to the survey stated that they believed their network was either safe enough or very secure, there were a large number who admitted that they doubted the strength of their defenses against attack. Almost all the businesses have experienced some kind of security threat over the last year, including everything from viruses, lost computers or back-up tapes, hacker attacks or employees stealing information.

While most of the companies stated they had firewalls, virus/spyware protection most stated they did not have:
- Smart password policy (forcing passwords that are hard to hack)
- Automated patch management for security
- Network use policies for employees (so they know how to use the network safely)

In general, many of the businesses do not appear to be fully protected or secure against attack, nor have tested their defenses.

Most small businesses now make use of a network of PCs and servers to run their operations. Vital company data is stored electronically in these networks and companies’ day-to-day functions depend on the network being available and secure. In many cases however, the small business either ignores or is unaware of the risks and threats that could jeopardize the safety of the data or the smooth running of the business.
