The Context
Much of the day-to-day support of IT is straight forward and can be handled by lower level IT staff, while certain tasks take a high level of expertise. The Client
McGrann Shea Carnival Straughn & Lamb, Chartered is a mid-sized law firm located in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. The firm was established in 1989 and was developed to provide the same full range of legal services found in much larger firms, with the personal attention and adaptability that are the hallmarks of smaller firms. The firm currently employs 50 people. Michele Sauder has been with the firm for 15 years and is the company's Administrator. Her responsibilities include the firm's IT environment which has become increasingly important to the firm.

McGrann Shea had been using a local IT support firm through the 1990's, but were unhappy with the turnover in support staff they saw and the lack of good communications. The firm bid for a new IT service company in 2002 and All Covered was awarded the contract. "All Covered offered everything we needed, with knowledgeable people and a robust support structure to back them up. Plus the price was right," commented Michele. "Things have worked out very well. We have a fantastic relationship with All Covered, both with our primary engineer and with the other team members that help out."
All Covered has prepared a number of assessments over the years for McGrann Shea, outlining different options for the evolution of their IT systems. These offer choices not only in terms of the type of technology but also in terms of the investment level and timing. There is also now a shared timeline in place for the planned replacement of hardware, thus avoiding the risks of sudden hardware failures in old equipment.
In terms of regular support, Michele commented that "I like the fact that it is All Covered's practice to check in with me before work starts on something and then close the loop with me afterwards."
All Covered now provides McGrann Shea with proactive support, where the systems are monitored and updated according to industry best practices. Michele commented that "this approach is excellent and avoids a lot of problems that could otherwise affect us."
Michele said that, "while we have considered hiring an internal IT person it would be hard to keep a high-end person challenged and an entry level person could be out of their depth at times. With All Covered's team we have the best of both worlds."
