Headers and Footers on Printed Web Pages

Ever print a web page from Internet Explorer and find a very long URL at the bottom of the page? To edit or remove information in the header and footer of a printed web page, simply go to the Page Setup from the File Menu (IE 6) or Print Menu (IE 7).

The default setting for a header might look like: &w&bPage &p of &P and the footer might show this: &u&b&d. So, how do you know what to add or remove by looking at this cryptic set of letters and symbols? If you want nothing to appear in the header or the footer, remove everything from both fields. However, if you do want to include the page number, date, URL/page address, see the following table for the correct symbol.

You can also combine any of these symbols with other symbols or with text. As an example, if you had &w Page &p of &P, you would see “Information Technology Services for Small Business – All Covered Page 1 of 2”.  If want to be sure you have the correct symbols in the header or footer, simply select Print Preview, then you can make the necessary changes before you print your web page.
